The Mpumalanga government will spend R182million upgrading the notorious Moloto Road in an attempt to reduce the number of accidents and fatalities on the infamous road.
The provincial government will this weekend also enlist the help of Zion Christian Church leader Bishop Barnabas Lekganyane, pictured, in a prayer service for a reduction in accidents on the road.
The road between Tshwane and Kwa-Mhlanga in Mpumalanga has been labelled "killer road" because of its high accident rate.
The road, which is used by more than 40000 passengers daily, has claimed 21 lives in 38 accidents.
Ntime Skhosana, spokesman for Premier Thabang Makwetla, said the government needed help from transport companies, taxi associations and passengers.
"Through solid partnerships with civil and faith-based organisations, the government hopes to publicise road safety awareness in an attempt to reduce the number of fatalities. At the same time we need to implement an integrated and safe public transport system," said Skhosana.
"The recently concluded Moloto Rail Development Corridor feasibility study, commissioned by provincial departments at a cost of R11million, has confirmed that the first phase from Tshwane to Siyabuswa - a distance of 173km - is viable and can be implemented immediately."
Skhosana added that construction of a rail line alongside Moloto Road as part of the provincial government's "big five" projects was under way.
"Construction of safe, reliable, accessible and affordable public transport infrastructure will stimulate the local economy," said Skhosana.
