Harmony in respect

Many were starting to wonder when President Thabo Mbeki would repeat his call for violence against women and children to stop.

Many were starting to wonder when President Thabo Mbeki would repeat his call for violence against women and children to stop.

He did so yesterday when he told an enthusiastic Women's Day rally in Kimberley that he will ask police to compile a full report on this infamy.

It soothed the ears of thousands in attendance, some certainly in some way or another affected by if not victims of this spiralling terror.

The relief was understandable. Not a day passes in this country without someone somewhere complaining about a botched case of women abuse. Mbeki said women farmworkers, mostly ignorant of their rights, would get "special attention".

This call should prompt the police to action.
