With a copy of Sowetan newspaper in hand, the man who allegedly shot his wife seven times and left her for dead on the side of the road handed himself over to the cops about 600km from the scene of the incident yesterday.

Businessman Solly Madileng, 48, had picked up his wife from her parents home to plead with her not to divorce him.

When 48-year-old Maki stood firm, he then pumped her full of bullets and shoved her out of the vehicle at Phake village, near KwaMhlanga, in Mpumalanga. The couple stayed in the area.

After apparently getting a copy of Sowetan in Durban, Madileng handed himself over to police at a nearby police station.

Mpumalanga police yesterday refused to reveal where in Durban Madileng was being kept in custody.

After the brutal attack, the injured Maki lay on the side of the road through the night until a cattle herder happened to stumble on her on Sunday morning.

She is still fighting for her life at a private hospital in Pretoria.

Police said preliminary investigations indicated that Madileng hid in Louise Trichardt, Limpopo, after attacking his wife.

Police spokesman Inspector Veli Semenya said: "Limpopo police on Saturday met a heavily drunk man at about midnight in Louis Trichardt and upon searching him, they found a 9mm pistol on him. They confiscated the gun and told him to collect it at the station in the morning when was sober."

Sowetan yesterday learnt that after Madileng shot Maki, he gave his mother R30000 and told her that she should use it for his burial because he was going to kill himself.

Earlier Madileng had visited Maki at her parents' home on Saturday. She had moved out of their marital home and told him it was over because he had abused her.

Maki's condition was yesterday said to be improving.
