Three taxi passengers died and 13 others were injured when their vehicle, travelling on the M4 southern freeway in Durban, crashed into a wall.

Initial investigations by police indicate that a passenger sitting on the front seat allegedly grabbed the steering wheel, causing the driver to lose control.

Emergency units said the major impact was to the passenger side of the taxi which scraped against the wall.

ER24 spokesman Derrick Banks said passengers were treated for serious injuries at the scene of the crash and were taken to nearby hospitals for further treatment.

l In a separate incident pupils at Clairwood Boys School narrowly escaped serious injury when their school bus collided with a truck in front of the school.

This was the second time in six days that a bus belonging to the same company was involved in a road crash.

Pupils said the bus was sideswiped by an articulated truck.

The bus then collided with a delivery vehicle before coming to a stop after it hit the pillar of a building.

Pupils were treated for minor injuries and sent to school.

"Nine other passengers who sustained moderate injuries were taken to a local hospital to receive further treatment," Banks said.

Deputy principal Tayob Hamode said the school was grateful that none of their pupils were hurt.

"Normally our students gather in the area where the accident happened. It's a miracle that our pupils were already in class when the accident took place."
