Rides on marketing that drugs you

Charm, charisma, dignity and power are some of the words that come to mind in attempting to describe the Hummer H3.

It was almost two weeks of noise and drooling as I drove through the roads of the province.

But what is it with these huge SUVs that everyone adores, I asked myself. Is it because US rap stars love them and often use them in music videos? It does not matter who you are, the Hummer brought out a child in every man I met. The H3's wide track, short overhangs, and huge tyres provide distinctive visual cues, but also underpin the solid off-road performance of the vehicle. The H3's flat, chiselled surfaces are simply pure Hummer, as are the upright windshield and windows. The signature seven-slot louvered grille, round headlights in their square surrounds and pronounced fender flares provide the impression that the vehicle is carved from a solid block of metal. This scaled down Hummer is about 90percent of the size of its larger H2 sibling.Power for the H3 comes from a 3,7 litre 5-cylinder petrol engine with variable valve timing. Maximum power is 180kW at 5600 rpm with peak torque of 328Nm at 4600rpm. The interior of the H3 is distinctive and refined with an expressive Hummer influence. Tight component fit with minimal gaps and flush surfaces provide a quality look and feel. Bucket type seats are fitted at the front while the rear seat is split 60/40 with a fold down option. But the Hummer H3 is not the greatest SUV around - its makers have put so much into its marketing that it just drugs you. For just over R320000, even an ordinary folk like you and me can own one.
