The former wife of kwaito star Doc Shebeleza is due to appeal her seven-year jail sentence for conspiring to murder him.
Paulina Moalosi, 32, unknowingly hired Shebeleza's brother-in-law to kill him. She paid the man R3000 for the job in 2004, but was arrested before the mission could be accomplished.
She was sent to jail on July 18 by the Newlands magistrates' court after being convicted of conspiracy to murder Shebeleza, whose real name is Victor Bogopane.
Moalosi apparently was not aware that Doc Shebeleza and the would-be hitman knew each other.
Moalosi's niece, Mathapelo Moalosi, denied that her aunt would have plotted to kill her child's father.
"There is no way that my aunt would kill Doc Shebeleza. They have a daughter together. Every daughter needs her father," she said.
The family said that in the three years that it took to conclude the case, they asked Bogopane to have it withdrawn but he refused, claiming that he did not open the case.
Bogopane and Moalosi have a 10-year-old daughter, Segaetso, who lives with him.
The couple were married under customary law in 1996 and divorced in 2000. Bogopane won custody of their daughter.
"He still brings her to visit but does not enter the house in Tshiawelo, Soweto. We are hurt that he did this to us," Mathapelo said.
Moalosi also has a six-month- old baby from another relationship.
Bogopane said he did not want to upset his family with comments to the press and that there was a child involved.
"She loves her mother and father, so saying things that might hurt her would not be fair," Bogopane said.
