The KwaZulu-Natal department of local government, housing and traditional affairs plans to clamp down on developers who build shoddy houses.
In a bold bid to end poor workmanship on public housing, the department has applied to the high court to sequestrate properties of developers found guilty of building poor quality housing structures since 1997.
Recently, the department had to spend R10 million to repair damaged houses built by a Mooi River developer. Department spokesman Mthatheni Mabaso said the developer had gone overseas and the department would try to confiscate all his properties. "After our investigation we discovered that the developer had delivered shoddy work. We are checking whether there is any property in the country that belongs to him. If found, it will be sequestrated to recover the money," he said.
Mabaso said the department was taking a stand against all developers who built defective RDP houses.
The Mooi River company was to have built 1400 houses costing R24million, but erected only 1200 houses with cracked walls and leaking toilets at a cost of R22million. The department had previously dealt directly with developers, but the task has now been assigned to local municipalities.
