Police have arrested a 31-year-old man at KwaMashu Men's Hostel on Sunday in connection with the murder of a policeman and attempted murder of two other police officers last month.

The arrest follows an attack on three railway police officers on July 12 at Duffs Road railway station outside Durban.

The attack claimed the life of 32-year-old Constable Sabelo Emmanuel Buthelezi while 30-year-old student Constable Mondli Cyril Jali was critically wounded. A third officer escaped unscathed.

Police spokesman Vish Naidoo said, "Detectives worked tirelessly to track down and arrest the suspect. He has already been linked to at least five other murders, three attempted murders and several armed robberies."

Naidoo said the suspect was found in possession of a firearm with its serial number filed off.

The suspect will appear in the Verulam magistrates' court soon on charges of murder, attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm, added Naidoo.
