A Pretoria police inspector shot dead his senior after he allegedly ignored repeated warnings to stay away from his wife.

The inspector's wife was seriously wounded during the shooting.

The captain, attached to police head office in Pretoria, was killed after he had attempted to flee with the inspector's wife and child inside his car.

The inspector had apparently given chase and then shot the captain when he stopped his car several kilometres away.

Captain Lucas Sithole, of the Pretoria area, confirmed the fatal shooting and the injury, but said the motive was still unknown and that available information was sketchy.

He said the incident occurred in Mamelodi West next to the Solomon Mahlangu Square after 9pm on Saturday. He identified the inspector as being 40 years old and attached to the Wierdabrug police. Sithole said the captain was 44 years old.

He said the deceased and the injured woman were inside the deceased's car when the incident occurred. He would not say whether the vehicle was parked or in motion during the shooting incident.

But Sowetan has discovered from reliable sources that both officers were staying at Sun Valley in Mamelodi West.

The sources also said that the affair between the captain and inspector's wife was a "well-known thing" in the area and among their colleagues.

The sources also said the deceased had ignored repeated warnings from the inspector and colleagues, respectively, to stay away from the man's wife. They described the inspector as quiet.

Sithole said police were struggling to find the deceased's next of kin.
