Police in Ladysmith in northern KwaZulu-Natal have launched a manhunt for the "kingpin" linked to the theft of the 23 goats that were found in a taxi on Tuesday.

Police arrested three men on the scene while two others were arrested later in the area on Wednesday afternoon.

Police spokesman Captain Charmaine Struwig said the suspects will appear in the area magistrates' court today.

"We are currently looking for another suspect who is linked to the case. The five suspects were charged with stock theft," she said.

It is alleged that the "kingpin" was having an affair with the daughter of owner of the goats, Muntukabuzwa Duze," she added.

Locals said the suspect was a well-known person who regularly visited Duze to view the goats and not the girl.

When Duze, who is a taxi driver in Orange Farm, saw pictures of his goats in Sowetan on Wednesday, he called his wife to contact the police to recover them.

The Ladysmith area is infamous for stock theft and police say they record at least two cases every week.

But police are closing in on the suspects. Last week an Estcourt businessman was arrested for allegedly buying stolen goats.
