Phororong Primary School principal Abram Malefo said the tensions over the demarcation decision had affected teachers and pupils.

"Staff are demoralised, pupils do not come to school and there is nothing we as teachers can do about it," he said.

A pupil, Sibusiso Kula who gave an interview to the SABC this week urging his peers to go back to school, was attacked together with a teacher who tried to protect him.

The irate pupils went as far as setting several classrooms on fire.

During the intense struggle led by the SA Communist Party (SACP) against government's decision to remove the township from Gauteng to North West, people who wore ANC attire were attacked.

Houses belonging to prominent ANC members and councillors were torched.
