Former Mangaung mayor Pappie Mokoena, his wife, and 14 others face a total of 259 charges of racketeering, fraud, corruption and money laundering, contained in an indictment.

Scorpions' Johan Roothman handed the charges in during a short court appearance in the Bloemfontein high court yesterday.

"The state has prepared a final indictment against the 16 accused. The KPMG report is also ready for the defence teams," said Roothman.

The matter allegedly involving R170million was postponed to October 22 for trial.

The accused face charges jointly or as individuals. Four businesses linked to some of the people are among the 16 accused.

The matter relates to a Scorpions' investigation at the Mangaung local municipality covering the period 2000 to 2005.

Among the other accused are city manager Mojalefa Matlole, chief operating officer Mzwandile Silwana, speaker Zongezile Zumane and Mokoena's political adviser Jacob Thithi. - Sapa
