The achievements of women in the media industry were acknowledged yesterday.

This was during the Vodacom Women in the Media awards ceremony at Summer Place in Johannesburg.

This year's top accolade went to the chief executive of Media 24 magazines, Patricia Scholtemeyer, who beat executive director of Gender Links, Colleen Lowe Morna, to the award.

Scholtemeyer said: "The magazine business has exploded over the years and I am proud to have been a driver of that explosion."

She is also credited with introducing new magazine titles and creating more than 300 jobs.

Veteran journalist Joyce Sikhakhane was given the Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of her work in the print media and radio during apartheid.

"The work of women journalists is usually not recognised because the media is still dominated by men. Women will take their rightful place and assert themselves in their work. It is then that we shall see changes in the industry," said Sikhakhane.

Television and radio journalist Siki Mgabadeli was hailed 2007's "rising star".

The award is given to successful women under the age of 30.
