Striking petroleum workers have threatened to disrupt fuel deliveries to garages from today.
The price of petrol went down by 15 cents last night, but this might not mean much to motorists if petroleum workers carry out threats to intensify the strike.
Workers in the petroleum, chemical, pharmaceutical and glass sectors started their strike on Monday. They are demanding higher pay and that contract workers be given permanent posts.
Chemical, Energy, Paper, Printing, Wood and Allied Workers Union (Ceppawu) spokesman Keith Jacobs said yesterday: "The full wrath of the strike will be felt today as our members intensify their strike in the petrol refineries and pharmaceutical factories.
"They might have reserve fuel but none of our members will transport it to the desired destinations," Jacobs said.
The union has 4000 workers in the energy sector. Jacobs also said that refineries were running at 40percent capacity.
The union had originally demanded a 10percent increase, but later decreased it to 9,5percent. Employers are apparently offering 7,5percent.
"The supply of fuel and drugs will come under pressure if our demands are not met," said Jacobs.
