A Soweto police inspector was arrested yesterday after crashing a state vehicle and then claiming he had been hijacked.
The 39-year-old inspector had called his colleagues, saying he was being hijacked metres away from his home in Chiawelo.
Police rushed to the scene and took him to Moroka police station to make a statement.
A case of hijacking was opened and other police units alerted, said spokesman Captain Lindiwe Mbatha.
The inspector returned home.
Shortly afterwards, the car was spotted in Lenasia, badly damaged.
"We don't know whether the car, an official Ford Focus, had collided with another vehicle or with an object," said Mbatha.
She added that the inspector, attached to the crime intelligence unit, later confessed to the investigating officer that he had crashed the car.
He has been charged with perjury and defeating the ends of justice.
He will appear in court soon.
Mbatha said the policeman appeared unharmed.
A colleague said the car was badly damaged.
However, on the scene where the car was found, no evidence of a crash could be found.
"It appears he might have crashed the car somewhere else and dumped it there.
"We don't know what he was doing in Lenasia because he was supposed to be reporting for duty at that time," said the colleague.
