Chief Luthuli did not fold his arms and relax in the comfort of his chieftaincy or Christianity while Africans were considered subhuman in the land of their birth. Their liberation was more important to him than his chieftaincy. And this is what distinguished him from other leaders, and made the chief a great visionary.
Today's leaders should emulate the chief's selflessness and compassion. Most importantly, they should create conditions for debate rather than try to manipulate people. Our leaders of the past were not driven by self-enrichment and greed at the expense of the majority. But today, leaders and ordinary citizens want power only to enrich themselves. Chief Luthuli's noble ideals have been replaced by greed and self-entitlement.
Our government might try hard to deliver service, but corruption, favouritism and nepotism make the task difficult. Those that are objective and transparent are seen as enemies.
Leaders, individuals and people in organisations who think like Chief Luthuli are marginalised by those who think only about themselves and their cronies.
