The Soweto Country Club will stage a memorial golf day on Saturday to honour professional golfers from the club who have died.

The event, the first of its kind to be played at Pimville, will be sponsored by the City of Johannesburg community development department.

Also to be honoured on the day are the club's veterans and retired golfers.

Davies Diphoko, club captain, said the purpose of the event was to show some kind of appreciation to those who have been part of the golf club for years.

"We're also inviting golfers, both males and females, as well as children, to come and play. We want to make this event one of the most exciting tournaments to be staged at this venue," said Diphoko.

Those who will be honoured posthumously are former players such as Cox Nhlapo, Fox Bosman, Samson Molefe, Absalom Nkosi, Dan Twala and Mike Nompula, who was the president of the club at the time of his death.

Veterans who will be honoured are Boikie Mogoerane, Zachariah Mavundla, Pat Madiba, Bernard Kgantsi, Samson Simelane and a host of others. Diphoko said the proceeds from the tournament will go to the Soweto Old Age Home.

The green fee is R100 a golfer and tee-off time is 7.30am. The best-dressed golfer on the day will receive a prize.

Meanwhile, the Ekurhuleni Golf Trust will host their monthly tournament at the State Mines Country Club in Brakpan on Sunday.
