The Independent Electoral Commission has been praised by both the ANC and the SA Communist Party for the work the IEC has done towards enhancing democracy in South Africa.

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for local government, housing and traditional affairs and senior ANC leader, Mike Mabuyakhulu, and SACP general secretary, Blade Nzimande, commended the IEC for a job well done.

They were speaking at an elections symposium organised by the IEC in KwaZulu-Natal.

Mabuyakhulu said: "The IEC has played a major role in transforming this country during difficult times.

"The commission makes our democracy visible and stronger." He said the country's democracy was surviving threats and it was everyone's responsibility to defend it.

Nzimande said nobody could turn a blind eye to the "IEC's contribution in deepening democracy in this country".

IEC provincial electoral officer Mawethu Mosery concurred with the two leaders. "Democracy is for all of us and we need to put our heads together to protect it."
