Mamelodi Sundowns have challenged the statement associated with the club's president Patrice Motsepe in Sowetan on Tuesday.
The statement reads: "It is most unfortunate the president of Mamelodi Sundowns Mr P Motsepe was misquoted and misrepresented in Sowetan of 17 July 2007 titled "Gift for Downs".
"In fact, the opposite is true, the president said during the interview that Sundowns have had to stop negotiations for players it wanted because certain teams were asking for excessive prices.
"The following quotation, which appears in Sowetan Soccer Guide magazine issue 11 is correct: 'I know it's going to be very difficult for us to get world-class players locally because the value of a player rockets once Sundowns shows interest.
"You find a player priced R500 000 for other clubs but once we make gestures, the fee rises to around R3 million. It is cheaper for me to get a world-class player from overseas than in South Africa. But that is not going to deter us from our plans."
Sowetan notes that the quote from the Soccer Guide magazine has been edited in the statement. The last line that reads: "We will have to dig deep if needs be" has been omitted. We note that the quote "I just want teams to name the price" does not appear in the magazine but we stand by it as it is in the interview notes, unless of course, it was not meant for the record which was not pointed out to the writer. - Sports Editor
