Writing is on plates

Judgment on whether several languages should be used on vehicle number plates in North West is expected to be handed down today in the Mmabatho high court by Judge AA Landman.

Judgment on whether several languages should be used on vehicle number plates in North West is expected to be handed down today in the Mmabatho high court by Judge AA Landman.

This follows an application by the Pan- South African Language Board (Pansalb) to force the Department of Transport to recognise the province's linguistic diversity.

In 1999 Pansalb received a complaint from Eugene Pretorius who objected to the use of "The Platinum Province" on number plates in English only, without provision being made for Afrikaans or Setswana.

Pansalb said: "We are confident that we have a strong case against the department." - Sapa
