Sundowns in dilemma

Mamelodi Sundowns are caught between the devil and the deep blue sea after the Premier Soccer League told them to choose between the yearly Telkom Charity Cup and the Confederation of African Football competition.

"Should Sundowns qualify to play in the Telkom Charity Cup, but select to play in the CAF competition, then the team with the next highest score in the voting stakes will automatically replace them in the tournament in Mmabatho," PSL chief executive Trevor Phillips said yesterday.

The Charity Cup will be played on August 4, while Sundowns visit Tunisian side CS Sfaxien the following day.

Sundowns approached the league to plead with CAF to change their fixture against Sfaxien in order to enable them to defend their Telkom Charity Cup title in North West.

But CAF rejected the request. Phillips said they had done all within their powers to convince CAF to agree to a new date, but to no avail.

By 4.30pm yesterday, Silver Stars were still leading with 145064 votes, second were Kaizer Chiefs with 61740 votes, then Sundowns with 60352 votes.

Fourth are Orlando Pirates with 55293 votes and fifth Bloemfontein Celtic with 33300 votes.
