Mdletshe to lead Sassu side

Charlotte Mdletshe has been appointed new skipper of the South African Students Sports Union women's volleyball national team.

Sassu president Glen Bentley said yesterday Mdletshe would lead the team to the World Student Games in Thailand from August 8 to 18.

Mdletshe, a student at Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), took over from Bonolo Ramphomane of the Nelson Mandela Metropole University.

Tercia Daniels is the deputy captain of the team, which will be guided by Pitso Mofokeng as coach and Muzi Dlamini as his assistant.

Buyi Ndlovu, team manager, said they were looking forward to the tournament in Bangkok, which is expected to attract more than 50 countries.

"The new national team that we've assembled for the tournament in Bangkok was selected during the five-day trials in the Western Cape early in June."

The squad: Mdletshe, Bianca Badripersad, Kandice Vardhan, Denise Pillay (all from University of KawZulu-Natal), Catherine Driver, Luciana Pierangeli (Tuks), Cynthia Nzaba (University of Johannesburg), Lefa Kesetse (TUT), Sashnee Nair (Durban University of Technology), Sheana Abrahams, Daniels and Zandy Erasmus (University of Western Cape).

The men's team: Popovic Aleksandar (Wits), Antonio Rossouw, Clint Schutters, Grant Goldschmidt, Leo Williams (all from University of Western Cape), Isaac Maleka, Muziwandile Dlamini, Sandile Mabaso (all Vaal University of Technology) and` Patrick Klostermann (University of Johannesburg).

Loet Groenewald is the coach, with Clive Doren as assistant coach-manager.
