Eastern Cape MEC for safety Thobile Mhlahlo has called on people who have information on the assassination of political activists by apartheid security forces to come forward and assist the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

Mhlahlo's call is in response to the current investigation by the NPA in connection with the killing of the Pebco Three - Sipho Hashe, Qaqawuli Godolozi and Champion Galela in Port Elizabeth, Cradock.

"In the light of the long unresolved cases of the Pebco Three, Cradock Four, the death of Siphiwe Mthimkhulu, Topsy Madaka and the disappearance of Mobs Gqirhana and Popy Magwaca, there is still need to close this painful chapter.

"There are many cases where nobody has come forward with information about the disappeared political activists," said Mhlahlo.

"The time has come for all those who were involved, including people who are still serving as members of the SAPS and other law enforcement agencies, to come clean in an effort to pave the way for lasting peace and reconciliation in our country."

In his policy statement, presented on March 15 at the Eastern Cape provincial legislature, Mhlahlo said a database of reparations and rehabilitation programme of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) was being updated for the province.

He said this was being done by a joint task team comprising the Departments of Justice and Constitutional Development, Social Development and Safety and Liaison.
