Eight people died in a horrific accident in Limpopo yesterday.

The accident happened on the road between Hoedspruit and Acornhoek.

Police spokesman Superintendent Mohale Ramatseba said the accident happened when a bakkie collided with a truck.

He said the bakkie, which was travelling from Acornhoek to Hoedspruit, was apparently delivering workers to their workplace. The accident apparently happened when the truck tried to overtake a bus.

Seven people, including the driver of the bakkie, died on the scene while the eighth was certified dead on arrival at the nearby Tintswalo Hospital.

Three other people were critically hurt with head and body injuries.

Ramatseba said seven other people escaped with minor injuries and were treated at a local health institution and discharged.

He said the names of those who died would be released once their next-of-kin had been informed.

The police spokesman said they were investigating a case of culpable homicide.

Greater Maruleng municipal manager, Refilwe Ramothwala yesterday sent his condolences to the families who lost their loved ones.

He also wished the injured a speedy recovery.

"We are still in talks to find ways of supporting the bereaved families with funeral arrangements," Ramothwala said.

The accident happened near the spot where four pupils of Vuxeni High School in Phalaborwa died in a minibus accident while on a school trip to a soccer match in Thulamahashe two years ago.
