Mthatha police have arrested seven suspects linked to a spate of robberies between Engcobo, Tsolo and Qumbu in the past three weeks.

The suspects who were arrested last week, appeared in court yesterday and the case was remanded to July 26.

Police spokesman Superintendent Xolani Sonjani yesterday said the suspects were positively linked to two cash-in-transit robberies, one at Engcobo and the other at Qumbu.

Sonjani said police had recovered two automatic rifles, live ammunition, a grenade, five grinders and a revolver.

"Their arrest follows a raid conducted by the Mthatha police," said Sonjani.

One of the suspects, Luzuko Mabhongo, 26, was also wanted in connection with an armed robbery that took place on March 12.

Mabhongo had escaped from Frere Hospital in East London in January where he was under police guard.

Siyabonga Dike, 30, Luyanda Mabhongo, 27, Yandisa Deyi, 23, Bongani Same, 32, were also linked to a spate of robberies in Eastern Cape.

Both made headline after they escaped from the Mthatha magistrates' court in March.

Sibuso Jejane, 23, and Andile Qhashani, 37, were also wanted in connection with the robberies in the Eastern Cape.

Police said they were still looking for more suspects in connection with the spate of heists in the area.
