Five Safa referees to go for fitness testing

The South African Football Association Referees will hold a fitness test next month for five of their members who could not make it last week.

Safa development officer Carlos Marques said they were Deidre Mitchell, Daniel Volgraaff, Geronimo Piett, Happy Radebe and Leon Streuis.

Marques said the five would only attend the fitness test and not the subsequent seminar to be in the panel next season, adding that they were still waiting for the National Referees Committee (NRC) to allocate the venue for the test.

Mitchell and Volgraaff could not attend their last workshop because they were engaged in military duty, Radebe had undergone an operation, Streuis was in Sudan, but reasons for Piett's absence were not known.

"There was no indication why Piett failed to attend because no reasons were forwarded to the NRC last week," said Marques.

But he was optimistic that the five would attend the fitness test on the day and pass it.

NRC chairman Kirsten Nematandani said the fitness test was a prerequisite to be eligible for the panel.

"I'm definite that the five will pass the fitness test. It is their responsibility to do their best on the day. They have been in the panel for sometime and we hope to keep it as it is," said Nematandani.

He said they were determined to bring on board women referees to officiate at elite league matches - not as assistants - in the near future.

"Mitchell did it, and our dream is to ensure that women also have a slice of the cake.

"But at the end of the day, it is the performance of an individual that will decide whether they meet the requirements to do the job," he said.

Last week 72 referees and assistant referees registered a 100 percent pass rate during the three-day seminar held at the High Performance Centre in Pretoria.
