Relatives and neighbours expressed shock at the gunning down of an Umlazi couple on Monday evening.

Jabulisiwe Ndiyane, 26, and her fiance Bheki Buthelezi, 36, were attacked in Umlazi's T-section while driving with two six-year-old boys, Mlungisi Ndiyane and Thamsanqa Ngcobo.

Jabulisiwe Ndiyane was shot in the head and forehead and Buthelezi was shot above the eye. Ngcobo was hit by a stray bullet and is in stable condition at the Prince Mshiyeni Hospital.

Buthelezi had come to visit his fiancee, Ndiyane. The couple, Ndiyane's son and his friend went for a drive.

Dumisile Ndiyane, Jabulisiwe's twin, said she was relaxing at her sister's house when a neighbour rushed in to tell her the bad news.

"He told me that my sister and future brother-in-law had been shot a few metres away from the house. I rushed out and found them already dead," said Ndiyane. "It was the most hurtful sight. They were madly in love."

Ndiyane said her nephew had managed to get out of the car and ran to the nearest house.

"He hid away when the culprits started firing. I hope he will be fine," she said.

The children are receiving counselling.

Superintendent Vincent Mdunge said it was difficult to establish the motive for the killing.

"We are investigating a double murder and attempted murder cases.

"It appears that the victims were followed by the attackers in an unidentified vehicle," said Mdunge.
