A 40-year-old man will appear in the Vereeniging magistrates' court today in connection with the murder of a policeman.
The man allegedly shot and killed Sergeant Johannes Lekhoba, 39, who was patrolling with his female colleague at Vlakfontein, in the Vaal, on Saturday afternoon.
Vaal Rand police spokesman Captain Veli Mcera said Lekhoba was shot when he confronted a group of men who were seated alongside a road smoking dagga.
"As Lekhoba approached the group the suspect pulled out a 9mm pistol, shot him twice and fled. Lekhoba died on the scene," said Mcera.
He said his colleague called for back-up. The man was arrested 800m away from the crime scene after he was identified by members of the community.
"The man was hiding inside a toilet. After seeing that he was cornered he opened fire and the police shot back."
He was arrested after he was shot in the thigh.
