Africa has a long way to go before it can subscribe to the concept of democracy.
If Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe is the symbol of African leadership, then the continent will always be the laughing stock of the world.
The damage that Mugabe has done to his country will take Zimbabwe another 30 years or more to recover from economically, and to rebuild the infrastructure.
African leaders must unite and fight this madness. To keep quiet and do nothing about the crisis will not solve the problem. In fact, their attitude is telling Mugabe to keep up the good work.
The statement that Foreign Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma made this week about the crisis is not enough. African leaders are not doing enough to change the situation in Zimbabwe.
It does not seem like there is anything at the moment that will force Mugabe to change his tactics. He can see that African leaders are divided about Zimbabwe and he is taking advantage of their disunity. If African leaders tackle the issue with one united voice, the way forward will be found quickly.
As long as there is division among Africa's leaders, Mugabe will carry on behaving the way he is and it will take a long time to find a solution in Zimbabwe.
