It is discouraging that female sports teams still face discrimination that we thought was dealt with when all South Africans where given the right to vote, and as an extension, the right to participate in any sport of their choice.

Most people in this country are not aware of the women's national rugby and soccer teams until they meet someone involved in those sports.

In some cases it is understandable that the public is not aware of what is taking place because these teams do not get media exposure like male teams.

Our ladies' national teams still have a long way to go if they are to give impressive performances because most of the players are from disadvantaged areas.

There are complaints about race quotas in rugby, but it is not possible to come from nowhere and perform well. Sports unions need to put a lot of funds into development, especially in disadvantaged areas, so we can begin to build up our national teams.

Our women's rugby and soccer sides feel that they are neglected because they are not given enough attention by both sports officials and the media. How many times do the women's rugby and soccer national teams play but are not televised?

Let's put more effort into developing women's sports teams because there are a lot of very talented women whose teams are struggling to get funding and exposure.
