The photograph is quite eye-catching, as is the subject.

President Thabo Mbeki, clad in a yellow T-shirt, flanked by a smiling Cosatu president Willie Madisha and a beaming ANC Deputy President Jacob Zuma, is quite revealing.

Though he is often described as aloof and too serious, this photograph tells a different story altogether. The President can really have fun if he wants to, or needs to for PR reasons.

This picture was taken in Mpumalanga at the ANC conference last year by Sithembile Lushozi.

The photograph is one of the finalists in the Photos for the Future project.

Finalists in the Photos for the Future project will be announced on The History Channel on DStv Channel 68 from July 17.

Hundreds of South Africans have submitted pictures revealing a moment in their past - whether distant or just yesterday - in the ambitious photographic project run by The History Channel to create a lasting visual record of life for future generations, through the collection of personal photographs and stories.

To view the photos go to the History Channel from July 17 and press the OK interactive button. The winning pictures will be announced at the end of July. Also see
