The concession by the Gauteng housing department that its officials were involved in the bungling of allocating one stand to more than one family should be viewed in a serious light.
The blunders have caused chaos at the Winnie Mandela informal settlement in Tembisa on the East Rand. Angry families who have for years been on the waiting list for stands to build RDP houses, have rightfully accused the department of incompetence.
One of the victims is Titus Modika who has been on the waiting list since 1994. He was granted a R15000 subsidy after he was allocated a stand in 2000. After waiting for years for a home he discovered early this year that his stand had been given to someone else.
This is ludicrous.
Destitute people are almost daily protesting against the government's lack of delivery.
They cannot be blamed as long as there are still officials who can screw up so badly.
The Gauteng housing department must move swiftly to remedy this injustice by allotting new stands to people who have been so terribly inconvenienced by this bureaucratic mess.
