Good as new C-Class Mercs

Charl Wilken

McCarthy Pretoria has a number of late 2006 Mercedes C-Class models up for sale with low mileage and in outstanding condition.

Every one of the cars we looked over appeared as good as new.

We found our test model, which had done a mere 40000km, absolutely amazing, especially considering the asking price.

One of the reasons the price was so good is because the new C-Class model is about to be launched later this year, which will immediately date the present model.

But, dated or new, in this segment of the market, Mercedes has set the benchmark when it comes to luxury and quality.

Indeed, the overall package provided by the C-Class is difficult to match. The 1,8litre four-cylinder model, for instance, boasts one of the smoothest engines - in the small luxury segment - on the road today.

The five-speed automatic transmission delivers power to the rear wheels for a great driving experience.

The engine produces 105kW and 220Nm, which will get you up to a maximum speed of more than 200kmh while the 0-100kmh sprint will take about nine seconds.

On the road our test model proved to have little to almost no cabin noise and the feel was that of a solid machine.

The ride was incredibly smooth because the car's suspension is designed to soak up every bump. Ride quality under any circumstance is good and with the electronic stability programme (ESP), you won't easily lose control - even in nasty weather.

With more than enough torque and a huge boot perfect for carrying almost any amount of luggage, the C180 is perfect for the family, for daily use by businessmen and for yuppies too.

The interior with its smart black leather seats was in almost perfect condition.

Safety features include an anti-lock braking system with an electronic stability programme (ESP), six air bags (dual front, side and curtain), multifunctional steering wheel and neck-pro headrests to prevent whiplash in the event of an accident.

The Mercedes C class features a front-loading CD-player, electronic windows, climate control, air-conditioning, power steering and leather upholstery.

l McCarthy offers buyers a choice from several Mercs each with less than 45000km on the clock.
