The imposing Seisa Ramabodu Stadium in Rocklands, Free State, is to get a new lease of life that will make it able to host international matches.

Seisa Ramabodu, which was built in 1982, is one of the three venues that the City of Mangaung has earmarked as training venues for the 2010 World Cup.

The project is initiated by the provincial department of transport.

George Mohlakoana, the city's World Cup Programme chief executive, identified others as Botshabelo Stadium in Botshabelo and Mmabana Stadium in ThabaNchu.

"We are going to spend in the region of R60 million for the legacy projects that will also be used as training venues," said Mohlakoana.

"In terms of the plans, Seisa Ramabodu Stadium will have a capacity of between 20000 and 25000. It accommodates 18000 people now.

"One of the things we want to see happening, as the city, is for international soccer to be played in the townships."

Sello Nduna, Bloemfontein Celtic communications manager, said they were delighted that Seisa Ramabodu would also be upgraded.

"It's great news. We don't want to take football away from the people. We are excited that our townships will also benefit from the World Cup," said Nduna.

Seisa Ramabodu, which is painted in the popular green and white colours of Celtic, has been graced by some of the big names in soccer.

Sowetan has also learnt that a feasibility study is under way to erect a new railway line connecting the City of Roses and Maseru.

The project is initiated by the provincial department of transport.

Mohlakoana said the upgrading of both Botshabelo and Mmabana stadiums, which each accommodate 10000 people, could sit 15000 in future.
