Conversing with Biko

Edward Tsumele

Prose writers, poets and essayists have an opportunity to shine by having a conversation with the late father of Black Consciousness, Steve Biko.

The competition was organised by the Steve Biko Foundation and book store Xarra Books.

Titled Conversations with Biko: Biko 30: 30 Writing Competition, it is open to anyone aged between 15 and 36.

The closing date is July 15 to submit poems or prose of not more than 3000 words about the relevance and impact of Biko's ideas. The work must be presented in the format of a conversation the writer is having with Biko.

The competition is open to writers from all over the continent.

Organisers expect competition to be fierce.

Any piece submitted and that the organisers feel is of literary merit may be included in any of the Steve Biko Foundation literature.

The winning entries will be published in a book to coincide with the 30th anniversary commemorating Biko's death in detention.

The book, to be titled Biko Today - Conversations With Biko, will be published as part of other activities culminating in the September festivities. Copyright will reside with the Steve Biko Foundation.

Entries must be sent to: writingbiko@xarrabooks.com
