KwaZulu-Natal's sleepy Hibiscus Coast humbled the mighty Jozi in the regional auditions of M-Net's popular Idols competition, which were concluded at the Uvongo Town Hall on Saturday.

KwaZulu-Natal's sleepy Hibiscus Coast humbled the mighty Jozi in the regional auditions of M-Net's popular Idols competition, which were concluded at the Uvongo Town Hall on Saturday.

On June 26 at the Standard Bank Arena in Johannesburg, Idols judges Dave Thompson, Mara Louw, Randall Abrahams and Gareth Cliff gave 16 wannabe Idols the go-ahead to the Top 100 phase.

Saturday in Uvongo saw 17 KwaZulu-Natal singers get the same good news.

After a slow start, the talented KwaZulu-Natal singers started to emerge triumphant from the audition hall. One of them was 19-year-old Jessica Yallup from Durban North, who literally fell on her knees and begged for a second chance.

"Gareth and Dave had voted yes and Mara and Randall had said no. So there was a stalemate," Yallup said afterwards. Louw apparently changed her mind and voted Yallup in.

Some of the other contestants who succeeded include 16-year-old Margie Conradie and 18-year-old Jonathan Burton from Pietermaritzburg, who told the judges that he had basically just waited out his entire school career "to get out and sing".

With the Uvongo auditions over it's on to Knysna, just in time for the Oyster Festival. Knysna auditions will be held at Oakhill School on Tuesday.

The final auditions will be at Supersport Park in Centurion on Wednesday, July 18.
