Developers and industrialists who release hazardous emissions into the air and also destroy the environment in other forms are in for an expensive awakening.

These companies will be paid random visits by the Gauteng Environment Management Inspectors and may face charges if illegal activities are found to be present at their places of business.

The campaign starts today and will see Gauteng's Green Scorpions visiting different companies to check whether they comply with government regulations that ensure the well-being and health of all citizens.

Sizwe Matshikiza, of the Gauteng department of agriculture, conservation and environment, said the Green Scorpions would ensure that those who were found to have ignored regulations were prosecuted.

"But before the litigation process, they have to issue a directive that will tell the transgressor to cease their activities."

He said if the transgressor failed to comply the Green Scorpions would seize all equipment that assist companies in damaging the environment.

Matshikiza also said that if all directives from the Green Scorpions were ignored then the companies would be prosecuted.

"A transgressor can be fined up to R10million or they can face a five to 10-year jail term."
