The eight-year marriage between IBO welterweight champion Isaac "Angel" Hlatswayo and trainer Manny Fernadez is over.
The 29-year-old fighter from Mabayeni village in Malamulele has joined Nick Durandt. Both Fernandez and Hlatswayo confirmed this move on Friday.
"I know it's a shock. Even my father did not expect it when I told him about my move. I understand his sentiments about Manny because he did a wonderful job to steer me to where I am today.
"However, there is no bad blood between us. We had and I believe we will still respect each other the way we did since I arrived in Gauteng in 1999. This is a business decision", said Hlatswayo. "I hope that my fans will understand my decision and continue to support me", said Hlatswayo, who made his professional debut under Fernandez in 2000.
Fernandez wants Durandt to compensate him because of his contract with Hlatswayo.
"I cannot keep an unhappy boxer in my gym. Our relationship was not as good as it was. This started last year. Any way guys with character will stay and those without it will leave. Good luck to him",
Their marriage was fruitful. Together they won the SA junior lightweight belt from Martin Jacobs in 2002 - defended it five times - one against Philip Ndou and Hlatswayo claimed the ownership of the Old Buck belt. They won the vacant IBO lightweight belt against Cassius Baloyi on August 31 2005 - defended it once against Aldo Rios - and vacated it after moving up to the junior welterweight division.
