Home is where a child feels love

We are deeply troubled by the bizarre and unnecessary drama involving orphans in Orange Farm in the Vaal.

We are deeply troubled by the bizarre and unnecessary drama involving orphans in Orange Farm in the Vaal.

A Good Samaritan, Eunice Mabaso, finds herself having to endure the pain of being separated from children she has been caring for - all in the name of bureaucracy.

The Gauteng Department of Social Development has shut down Siyakhula Orphanage, ostensibly because it operates from a house and is not registered.

On the surface, this might be a valid argument, but it becomes nonsensical upon closer inspection.

Why did the authorities not take steps to legitimise the facility or relocate it to appropriate premises since 1995?

Why the sudden hurry to snatch the children away from their familiar surroundings and the neighbourhood they love and trust, and dump them among strangers in unfamiliar environments?

Small wonder the children fled from their supposed saviours!

Is this how the department celebrates the coming into effect this week of the controversial new Children's Act, whose professed aim is to promote the welfare of children?

We appeal to the powers-that-be to heed Mabaso's heart-wrenching cry.

They should leave her alone, return the children they seized, find those who fled and let the orphanage operate until it can relocate to the more suitable accommodation they have been promising since 2003.
