A four-year-old mentally disabled girl is in hospital after she was allegedly raped by a neighbour.
She is receiving treatment at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital in Durban.
Police spokesman Superintendent Zandra Hechter said the mother left the child in the care of a neighbour in Harding, KwaZulu-Natal, while she attended a community meeting.
"It was later discovered that the child had been raped," Hechter said.
A suspect was arrested and appeared in the Harding magistrates' court where the case was postponed to Tuesday.

Thobile Cwele, 32, was walking with his girlfriend in Mach Location in Harding when they were attacked by four armed men.
Cwele's girlfriend was assaulted and sjamboked, but she managed to escape.
Cwele was shot dead and robbed of his cellphone.
"Three men were arrested on Tuesday for murder and robbery, and the fourth was expected to be arrested soon," Hechter said.
