The five people accused of stealing Winnie Madikizela-Mandela's jewellery are looking for another lawyer.

Paul Githuka, 46, his wife Nolwazi Githuka, 44, and their children Jerry, 19, Mpumelelo, 21, and their uncle Mbuso Vutela, 47, were arrested for allegedly stealing Madikizela-Mandela's jewellery, valued at R4million, from her Orlando West, Soweto, home in April.

The Githuka family told Sowetan yesterday that they wanted to replace Owen Khumalo because they had lost confidence in him.

Orlando magistrate Mohamed Jooma gave the family three weeks to find a new lawyer, after Khumalo had recused himself.

"We will get through this, only God knows why this is happening. This is the only way to look at it," said Nolwazi.

Her husband said they felt Khumalo "had been part of the whole set-up" and that they needed to find someone from the outside.

The five are out on R3000 bail each and will appear again on July 26.
