The ANC has condemned the brutal killing of councillor Ntai Mokoena of Metsimaholo township in Deneysville, Free State.
Mokoena, an ANC councillor for 13 years, was killed on Monday by an angry mob of about 500 people who were protesting against service delivery.
He was attacked near his house and died on the way to hospital.
In a statement yesterday, the ANC described Mokoena's killing as an unacceptable act of barbarity that would not be tolerated.
"No amount of dissatisfaction with the delivery of services accords people the right to kill," said the statement.
The ANC said there were adequate platforms through which disaffected communities could raise concerns.
" As the ANC we remain committed to our promise of 'a better life for all' and we shall spare no effort in ensuring that we meet this goal."
The ANC said it was deeply saddened by Mokoena's killing. It called on the police to ensure that those responsible were brought to book.
"We extend our sincere condolences to Councillor Ntai Mokoena's family as we mourn the untimely death of this dedicated servant of the people," the ANC said.
Provincial and Local Government Minister Sydney Mufamadi, pictured, visited the family in the Free State town on Tuesday.
A former mayor and United Democratic Movement councillor, Tokonyana Mokgatla, was arrested with 16 others on Tuesday in connection with Mokoena's death. They will appear in the Deneysville magistrates' court today.
