The Mpumalanga Department of Health and Social Services said yesterday it welcomed the new Children's Act that came into effect on July 1.

Department spokesman Mpho Gabashane, pictured, said the new act took the promotion of children's rights and protection from social ills to new heights.

"It moves from a premise that children, irrespective of their social background, should be provided with equal opportunities to grow in a safe environment, which will in turn enable them to become stable and productive adults in future," Gabashane said.

Gabashane said the act was welcomed because "it closes loopholes that existed in the Child Care Act, which hampered the state's ability to respond to the realities facing children and their families".
