Act fast-tracks kids to adulthood

The country slid further into the abyss of immorality with the imposition this week of the ill-informed Children's Act.

The country slid further into the abyss of immorality with the imposition this week of the ill-informed Children's Act.

This is an attack by the state on the rights of adults to run their households and raise their children to the best of their knowledge, with due regard to their culture, norms and values.

Admittedly, some parents are lacking in the morality stakes and do not always act in their children's best interests. We refer here, for example, to those parents who abuse their children and wilfully deny them education and a chance to become successful in life.

But what gets our goat is the bloody-mindedness behind the new law that capitulates to the societal ills that are increasingly robbing our children of innocence and a chance to enjoy childhood.

The fact that some 12-year-olds have sex does not mean that we should pass laws that condone and dignify such behaviour as "normal".

Do we really want to live in a society where it is "normal" for children to undergo the painful experience of having abortions without the knowledge of their parents?

When did we as a nation decide that parental authority over children was inconsistent with modern times?

How dare politicians, here and elsewhere, declare 18-year-olds adults who can enter into contracts without the knowledge of their parents, while dependent on them?

Our masters are barking up the wrong tree on this one.
