Reliability is a bonus

Charl Wilken

Toyota's Corolla model is no stranger to the South African car-buying public.

In fact, Corolla is one of Toyota's best sellers, undoubtedly the result of good pricing and high levels of reliability.

Our used-car test model was the Corolla 140i.

It was still solid in every respect.

It is the type of car that won't let you down and you also get good standard equipment at a good price.

What is even better is that the design of the Corolla will stay with us for quite some time. In context the Corolla 140i is better priced than most smaller cars, which makes it the perfect car for a young family.

Apart from the Corolla being so well priced, ours has only done 37000km, making it as good as new.

The overall condition of the test model justifies the low mileage and the car looks great.

The Corolla is a car in its class with "practical" written all over it. For passengers and the driver, the cabin of the car has lots of space and enough legroom for rear passengers. Boot capacity is also huge, even with a full load of passengers, the Corolla will fit all the luggage.

The four-cylinder 1,4litre engine delivers a fair 71kW and 127Nm and is mated to a smooth five-speed gearbox delivering power to the front wheels.

There is also enough power for overtaking and to cruise at freeway speeds without constantly changing gears to keep up with traffic. Its breath runs out at about 180kmh.

Further reason why the Corolla is ideal for family use.

Our test model was equipped with a radio, aircon and power steering.

When buying a Corolla it comes with peace of mind knowing that there will be no hassles when it comes to service. And on the other hand, it is rare that a Toyota will give you problems.
