Murder kingpin shot dead

Mary Papayya

The kingpin behind the fatal shooting of a patron during a robbery at a plush Durban restaurant in May was shot dead by police yesterday.

Marc Joubert was celebrating a 30th birthday party with friends at St Tropez in Essenwood Road, Musgrave, when six armed robbers demanded cash and jewellery from patrons .

Joubert was killed when panicked patrons tried to escape and robbers opened fire indiscriminately.

Police made the breakthrough during a pre-dawn surveillance at the KwaMashu Men's Hostel in A Section yesterday, said Superintendent Vincent Mdunge

Detectives from the organised crime unit went to the hostel after a tip-off from the public.

"Police spotted the suspect Bhekinkosi Shandu, 26, aka Rusta Msisi, at about 2am.

"When he realised he was surrounded he opened fire, but police returned fire, killing him on the spot," Mdunge said.

An AK-47 rifle and a handgun were recovered at the scene.

Mdunge said police went to Umbilo on further information where they nabbed a second suspect also linked to the fatal shooting .

The suspect is being questioned by police and is expected to appear in court today.

"Shandu is believed to be the ringleader of a gang that targeted restaurants in the Musgrave, Berea and Glenwood areas.

"He is also believed to be the one who shot and killed Joubert on May 26. We expect to make more arrests," Mdunge said.

St Tropez manager Warren Britton hailed the arrest.
