A man claiming to be a Zion Christian Church (ZCC) priest allegedly killed a seven-year-old girl while performing a healing ritual on her last week.
The priest, known only as Moruti Mogashwa of Malebitsa village in the KwaMhlanga area of Mpumalanga, allegedly locked little Mahlatsi Dlamini in a makeshift sauna in a shack to heal her.
The little girl allegedly suffocated to death.
Despite the little girl's horrific death, this man of the cloth is still apparently performing healing rituals. People still come from far and wide to be healed by him.
Mahlatsi's mother, Johanna Dlamini, 41, yesterday told Sowetan: "My child complained about pains in her legs and arms. I took her to Moruti Mogashwa for healing.
"The 'priest' put hot rocks in a bath of water to fuel up the steam. He then locked Mahlatsi inside for about 15 minutes. When we went to check on her, she was dead," said the mother fighting back tears.
Dlamini said on seeing that the little girl was dead, Mogashwa said the family could only fetch her body later in the evening so that there would be no further witnesses to the event.
"Later when we went to collect her body, Mogashwa said he would help us with funeral arrangements, but he did not.
"It's been a week since my child died, but we have not heard from him as agreed," she said.
Dlamini said she had not reported Mogashwa to the police because she was herself sick.
This is the second death from a ritual healing in the area.
In January another ZCC priest, Michael Mabeye, allegedly killed Letladi Nkadimeng, 50, in another ritual healing. He allegedly put six hot rocks in a bath of water and locked the shack for 30 minutes.
Nkadimeng apparently burnt to death. Mabeye was not arrested because, according to police, the victim's family did not report the matter.
