The newly appointed artistic director at the Windybrow Theatre in Hillbrow, Jerry Pooe, will present Peace In Our Lifetime from July 12 to July 22 in a bid to revive the "dull theatre".
Peace In Our Lifetime is a reworked version of Pooe's musical Peace in the Valley, which was first shown on a professional stage at the Playhouse Drama Theatre in Durban in March 2000. Before then the show had been performed on a smaller scale.
The show also enjoyed a successful tour of New York and Canada in June 2000.
The musical has been reworked to look at issues in a democratic society in general and peace on the African continent as a whole.
Inspired by Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet as well as Leonard Bernstein's musical, West Side Story, this is a tale of star-crossed lovers Sputla and Maria, who come from different townships.
They despairingly declare their feelings for each other and watch their love become battered and eventually crushed by conditions of conflict, revenge and gang warfare.
The experienced Pooe, who owns Eager Artists, a theatre company based in Durban, has written many successful shows, including My Voice, My Life, Mine Ghost, Peace in the Valley, Ekhaya Popi and Lalela.
On this one Pooe works closely with choreographer Zenzi Mbuli.
