ANC wants top court

The ANC is pushing ahead with its plan for the constitutional court to become the so-called apex court in the country.

The ANC is pushing ahead with its plan for the constitutional court to become the so-called apex court in the country.

Policy chief Jeff Radebe told the media after the party's four-day policy conference that this was one of the issues that would go forward to the national conference in December.

Radebe said the 1500 delegates had recommended that the constitutional court should be the court of last resort for all matters both constitutional and non-constitutional, with the supreme court of appeal having the status of intermediate court.

Regarding the ability of constitutional court judges to deal with commercial matters, Radebe said he was "not empowered to express an opinion on the competency of judges". - Sapa
