Mpumalanga needs more than R3 billion for the reconstruction of roads damaged by coal haulage trucks in the Highveld regions.

Trucks that ferry coal to Eskom power stations have been blamed for the massive damage to the roads.

Another contributing factor is said to be overloading.

Roads and transport MEC David Mabuza, pictured, said a study conducted by Eskom indicated that about R3 billion was required for the reconstruction of the roads.

Presenting his budget speech on Tuesday, Mabuza said the coal haulage roads project was one of the plans approved by the provincial executive council.

He said the project was divided into three categories of roads needing immediate attention; those to be repaired in the next 12 months; and those to be upgraded in three to five years.
